    Higher spending, fewer jobs

This is corroborated in this (http://www.dollarsandsense.org/archives/2010/0310garrett-peltier.html) article by Heidi Garrett-Peltier, a research fellow at the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, who helped to author, “The U.S. Employment Effects of Military and Domestic Spending Priorities: An Updated Analysis,” by Robert Pollin and Heidi Garrett-Peltier ...

    Is Military Keynesianism the Solution?
Why war is not a sustainable strategy for economic recovery.

It is true that military spending creates jobs throughout the economy, and that many of those jobs are well-paying. But at a time when our jobless rate is high, infrastructure is crumbling, and global climate change is becoming an increasingly urgent matter, we must ask whether military spending is truly a solution to our economic woes or whether we might be able to create more jobs in productive areas that also help us meet longer-term goals.

In a recent paper that I co-authored with Robert Pollin, we show that dollar per dollar, more jobs are created through spending on clean energy, health care, and education than on the military. Further, we show that more middle-income and well-paying jobs are created in all of these areas. For each $1 billion of spending, over 17,000 jobs would be created in clean energy, close to 20,000 in health care, and over 29,000 in education. That same $1 billion would create only 11,600 jobs as a result of military spending. If we look at well-paying jobs, those that pay over $64,000 per year, these alternative domestic spending areas also outperform military spending. The same $1 billion would create 1,500 well-paying jobs in clean energy and just over 1,000 in the military—clean energy creates 50% more good jobs than military spending. Education, which is labor-intensive and creates many well-paying jobs per dollar of expenditure, creates close to 2,500 jobs paying over $64,000—that’s 2.5 times as many as the military.

You boys seen enough evidence yet?

    I can always get more.

Completed the game on Heroic with a couple of friends...the last few missions were very good...will try to do it on Legendary over the next few weeks...

I'm growing more and more disenchanted with Multi-player though...I'd rather pop in Halo 3...the game variants and maps are much more enticing...

No. Please god no. I don't know how many of you have done e-books but e-books on anything smaller then a 4" screen sucks. HARD.

What Apple needs to do is come out with a dedicated device. Integration seems the only way they can push into another market at this point. (Shades of MS Windows with [insert anything here.] integration.)

What Apple needs to do is form an alliance with E-Reader / Peanut Press and having it integrate with iTMS. Then come out with an e book reader that uses digital ink. This is the tech that can paint a screen then cut power to the screen yet still have the image remain. In cases such as this we are talking WEEKS of battery life. Use digital ink + Apple's standard design flare + iTMS and I can guarantee people will eat it up.

Does anyone know how big this would be? It would be huge. No beyond huge. Literature is as universally accepted as music. It's used everywhere from text books in schools, to training manuals, to maintenance manuals, to entertainment in the home, to entertainment while you are sitting waiting for the dentist. Imagine subscribing to a magazine and having it downloaded off of iTMS like a podcast.

In short I would sell my first, second, third born sons, and cut off a pinky toe for Apple to release an e-book reader. This is Sony's attempt:

    http://dynamism.com/images/extra/DSCN0862.jpg

No one in the market has done the design right yet. There is this huge market waiting for someone to step up to the plate and get it done right, easy, and elegant. Sound familiar?

But above all please PLEASE PLEASE dont integrate it into the iPod. It would be doing major disservice to the emerging industry.

On second thought, silicon addict, you just might be right. big enough to read on just might be too big for the ipod. hrm.

I don't really care how inefficient Flash is or whether other web standards can already do things that Flash does, but I want to play Farmville on my iPhone and until there is Flash on the iPhone theres not FarmVille on the go :( I don't see why the end user should be punished b/c of this. Flash should be allowed and for everyone who doesn't like Flash just don't use it. I just don't see why some people not liking it should effect the other 30 million iPhone users. Maybe the web developer should have used something else to build their site, thats not my fault, but that doesn't make their sites content any less useful. We should still be able to use it.

All this moral discussion about stealing a 1500,- bucks suite of software is pretty ridiculous if you put it into a relation to the billions of dollars/euros stolen from our tax money by the private central banks.

If a corporation steals billions that's ok, but if someone pirates a single piece of software that's theft.

The same rules should apply to everyone.

Btw, I have only legit software on my computer.

    my point exactly...

I really don't get all the wankers here with all there high morals about downloading is steeling. It aint steeling, and if it was i wouldn't feel one single bit of guilt...i'm getting robed here everyday by the government, at work, hell i'm even getting robed buying grocery's...why should i be the idiot paying for something i can get for free...and don't start the "people are losing their jobs if you don't buy it" if they do than they should get in line. Here's an idea... maybe the CEO's could spare a few of their billions to help the staff out and make them keep their job...

In other words, what we saw tonight was nowhere near the final form of the application.

This statement has me a bit puzzled. FCP is supposed to be out in around 2 months. Are they going to rush the rest into FCP in this amount of time, or get the basics in there, then drag onto multiple updates?

Not at all. They wanted to give folks a taste. Back in February they had enough to do that and 'locked' the current form (with perhaps some things left out on purpose) as the demo. Showed it to a select group and then saved it for last night,

Then kept working on FCP and everything else (which has been under work for a while)

According to the Wikipedia article, a Home Basic upgrade is only $99.95, which is cheaper than the standard $129 for OS X releases. Then again, education customers can often get Mac OS for around $70 in some cases, if I'm not mistaken. I don't know if there will be education discounts for Vista or how much they will be. With so many versions and price points for Vista and an unknown price tag for Leopard, it's very complicated to make comparisons...

Now one of the big questions is, who can get a Home Basic upgrade and how much are Home Basic users missing out on if they get that as opposed to Aero, etc.? No one knows for sure all the details at this point and we won't know for sure until official announcements are made. Although I would take OS X over Windows any day, we have to be cautious I think before saying Mac's upgrades are cheaper than Windows'. It looks like in many cases they will be, but not necessarily in all cases.

    Ssteve,

I wish you had read my post a little more closely. I did not go through with the exchange process because the form did not accept my serial number as is. I had changed the last letter to see if it would accept something else.

Regardless of that, I will wait til an appropriate time to call or try online again with my serial number. No doubt it will work later either online or on the phone.

odd works for me too changing the last letter to a B instead of an A

The 2.0 model also includes 4MB L2 cache instead of "just" 2MB L2 cache... remember the days when we used to measure L2 in increments of 256KB?

Yes, it drives people to buy the 2.0 model and YES it drives away the others that are not prepared to spend this extra 200$....

Thanks, you saved me a lot of stress. After reading the specs and seeing it was for PC's only, I tried to cancel the order. Sorry, I'm not a tech guru. But why would they state something like that and possibly limit their sales, when all they have to say is it can be formatted to whatever system you have?

    http://www.wdc.com/en/PRODUCTS/Products.asp?DriveID=781

I'm guessing because of the software CD, which will only run on PCs. But yeah, I agree, it would be smarter to just put one Mac-compatible app on the CD and then market it for both systems.

Again, you've made some good points, Nipsy. But you're so childish in the way you present your replies, with stupid and pointless remarks about things that i haven't addressed and wouldn't care to address, that i'm not about to take you seriously.

You have insulted me and since you are taking my responses so personally, i will respond in like.

"business acumen"? Hahaha. Grow up, kid. You have demonstrated that you know nothing of the computer industry or the position that Apple holds, but merely fabricated what position YOU think Apple holds, "as a shareholder". You haven't admitted when you were wrong and you're just blindly arguing for Apple.

I never said anything about us designing chips for Apple and to even bring that up is moronic. It doesn't add to the argument or make a point, it's just suggesting that i said something that i didn't. If you can't see that, then kindly re-read my posts before replying.

You are not getting kudos for making good points, you are getting kudos for making popular replies. The ones that most Mac users here want to hear - How much Apple owns and how they have a masterplan that, mysteriously, never seems to quite work out for them, now does it.

Well it seems as though Apple has gone with IBM, so part of their "plan" is to improve chip speed, just as i suggested they should.

I never suggested that the only way for Apple to survive is purely chip speed, i suggested that that is a major part of it and to say it isn't is moronic.

In the end, Nispy, we have agreed on many points and if this whole argument had gone a little better, without petty, childish insults on your part, which i'm ashamed to say that i have contributed to in this last post, and complete missunderstandings of my posts, we could have come to some kind of constructive conclusion. Clearly that wasn't your aim.

I just hope you have achieved whatever you intended to with your childish endeavors in this thread.

I hate car analogies but yeah a $50K Lexus is better than a $20K GM, but for some people it is not and will never be worth 2-3x the cost. Some people don't need or want to pay the premium for a car that can parallel park itself or rear heated seats! ;-) Lexus has a cap on what their marketshare could be no matter how great their product is which was my original point about Apple.

The difference is that a $50K Lexus costs more than forty times more than a 13" MacBook Pro. This discussion was about whether Apple is limited by being "affordable". There are lots of people who _cannot_ buy the Lexus. But everyone who buys the $20K GM can easily buy a 13" MBP which costs just 6 percent of the GM.

Yes, there will always be people who decide to buy a cheaper computer. What I am saying is that there are very few people who _cannot_ buy a Macintosh, as is claimed so often. And those who decide to buy cheap, they should think about how you get the best value for your money: You buy something of quality, without any unneeded luxuries that just waste money, and then you look after it.

And finally the day has come when I can move on from the iBook G4 that I can barely use and this piece of crap http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Gx270-Intel-Desktop-installed/dp/B001O018Y2 now the time has come to get a Mac and they are taking their sweet time with the new stuff. Sure, they sued HTC, sure, they have the pointless iPad that doesn't support a bunch of stuff on the web, but they're leave the Mac out to dry. It makes me sad :(

When new products are released in a keynote like the one coming up, are they normally ready to ship?

It just depends. Motorola was notoriously slow at ramping up production of new chips. Consequently, Apple would release new hardware and buyers would have to wait 1-3 months to receive them. That has since improved since Apple got a lot of bad press from that practice. I'm guessing that you'll have to wait a couple weeks for conroe & woodcrest based systems and perhaps a month for merom.

Well it's a question of if you rather touch screen or physical buttons. And all this has been said before but who cares right? its just a forum. I'm not a fan of anything touchscreen that's not 10". Its just too cramped and all some people want, is a music player. Forget all the iOS and all the games and calculators and gadgets. Sometimes ppl just want a music player. And i haven't broken the screen on my iPod ever. 90% of touch break in the first month. I know a lot of people who I've laughed at so many times because of it. Ive thrown my ipod, it fell off the earphones as i was swinging it, (fill in creative way to try and break something here). And the max is what at the moment? 32 gig? The classic is a heavy duty storage machine for most. It's not hard at all to navigate. It should always go artist\album\song or sometimes if you're like me just listen to a whole album at a time.
