The company I worked for back in the day used Macs - we got tons of these in.
The box and packing all made it into the garbage - who knew? :(

1. is the samsung grey out?
2. what filesystem does the samsung drive use? Go to applications then the utililes folder for this and double click disk utility the filesystem must be hfs or mac os journed

The Samsung is not greyed out.
I previously erased the disk with the Disk Utility, choosing the format Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Are you seriously concerned about that? How about them robbing us from years? They have made more than enough mate. Don't know how US people perceives their carriers but in Canada most of us are fed up from the big 3.

Is there a way to check a USB port? The one on the front of my powermac g5 was working fine yesterday, but today won't recognize anything. The same devices plugged into the back port work fine. It appears to power the device plugged in, but it doesn't get recognized.

False alarm. It goes away after a few minutes :o So I guess it's not exactly burned-in after all. Just lingers around for a bit like a bad fart.
Wonder what's causing it? Slow refresh or something? It's consistent and replicable too.
If I'm typing a message for a minute and then switch over to the snapshot/eBay page with the gray background, I still see the keyboard outline and anything else that was white.

I looked up RipIt and it seems like theres two ways it works. The first is it is ripping the videots folder which basically copies the raw dvd files to your computer. So as you say doesn't compress the video at all. But can also compress on the fly which is what Handbrake only does.
So if you actually are ripping the videots folder then dropping that into Handbrake you are taking an extra step that is not really needed.
You don't gain anything in doing it this way because this is the way I actually used to do it myself.
Whether you are in RipIt or Handbrake just choose a preset to convert to and mp4 that you can then drop into iTunes. It will take about two hours to convert. But thats all you need to do.
In HandBrake use either the "Universal or AppleTV" preset and go. Don't adjust any settings.

i'm in the middle of reinstalling FCP3.04 again, and i was wondering if this ever happened to anyone else?
My desktop machine is running FCP 3.04 adn QuickTime Pro 6.3 and i can no longer export an MPEG-2. this effectively renders DVDSP useless, and thusly i'm pretty pissed off.
My tibook runs FCP 3.04 with Quicktime Pro 6.2 and there are no problems. Anyone else have an issue with the upgrade and your QTP key?

I'm looking at picking up a Mac Mini as a HTPC and dropping cable, but then I realized my 42" plasma only supports 1024x768 resolution.
I'm guessing this won't exactly be optimal, so I'm weighing whether to get a better tv. I don't really want to have to spend the extra money on a new set, so I'm hoping I could get some opinions as to how dismal the experience will be with my current set up.

I don't know for sure, but I think that behavior is built-in to the external drive and is not controllable from OS X. You don't say what drive you have, but this sleep behavior seems to be built in to many external drives and enclosures these days.
