That store gets busy, and with the layout of the store, I can only assume that the line would form outside the store. Wonder how the security will be acting about that, if that happens...
i might be there... might go to Best Buy.

I am looking into acquiring a NAS unit to accomplish a couple of items. First I would like to use the storage as a time machine backup for the 3 macs in the house. Second, I would like to use it as a centralized iTunes depot that I can access with my laptops both on my LAN and when I'm outside the house. Third, I would like to be able to back up the NAS to an external hard drive so I can take the backup drive out of the house.
I had heard that one issue with a NAS and time machine with multiple computers is that a computer with a larger amount of changes could delete some backups for a computer with lesser amounts of changes.
Anyway, does anyone have any experience or pointers in setting something like this up. Thanks

Could be the HDD has died. You might try booting from the install DVD to see if it will do that. There's a sticky (I think) about what to do when your mac won't boot.

Save as a png or tiff, both of these formats support transparency. Using one of these will flatten everything into a one layer file. Then bring that into fcp.
Never use a PSD because for one if you have any layer effects they will not show up in FCP. The second is if you do have a PSD comp set up where you do want to animate the individual layers. Its better to use Motion or AfterEffects. This is what there made to do much easier then FCP. Then export a .mov using ProRes 4444 or Animation Codec, because these both support an alpha channel if needed so you can layer over your video in FCP and see what ever underneath it.
Both of these support native PSD file import containing layers. But once again you might need to flatten the effects especially in Motion. AfterEffects I think holds the layer effects because of them both being Adobe apps.
I prefer to save each individual image as a seperate png or tiff and then resemble myself in Motion of AfterEffects. That way you leave the original PSD untouched and can go back and adjust things if needed and resave over the old file.
I just feel you have more control this way. But thats just me.

You can use a shellscript to make it easier:
mount -t smbfs //user@server/sharename share
this wil require you the make a folder named "share" in the user folder
This wil also work, put it in login items if you want to log into it when you log on
tell application "Finder"
open location "smb://user:password@computername/sharename"
end tell

Oh my ...
That's a "DUH" moment - can't believe I forgot about that!
One question related to -- is there any mouse/trackpad movement/app that can "simulate" a tab-press?

For awhile now (before and after various point upgrades) I've been seeing something that is a little odd. When I save items to my desktop, I end up getting multiple "copies" of them. Except they aren't really copies, but just duplicate icons. If I throw one of them away, they both go.
Here is an example:
http://www.mremw.com/MR_Images/Picture%201.jpg
As you can see, it doesn't happen to all files all the time (and never to hard drives or CDs). What's even stranger is that occasionally, if I'm saving a file to the desktop, or modifying an existing desktop file, the icons multiply even more:

I've tried most things (repairing permissions, rebuilding user account, etc.) with no luck. I'm assuming I might need to do a fresh install or something.
Anyone else get this?

BUT now I need to yousendit these files to someone else. I don't know what they're called or where to find them on my hard drive? :(

My wife bought me a Spiderpodium last week, and I have to say it's really cool and practical. This tool, from Breffo, is a sort of a gadget holder -- really great to use with iPods, especially for people who love to do certain activities like biking and running on a treadmill. This thing has 8 bendable "legs", and you can wrap four of them around your gadget to hold it in place, and wrap the other 4 around your bike's handle, your treadmill, or any place, to secure it and keep your hands free. Very inexpensive at 20 dollars!

If it is a short series of clicks (a 'tick, tick, tick' sound) this is fairly common. The click sound is caused by the drive parking its head. There are multiple causes for this, including power management and shock detection. If it is harmless, it will tend to happen when the HDD is idle.
If it is a louder knocking sound... You are more likely to have a problem.
Whichever the case, don't be complacent.... Download a copy of 'SMART reporter' (it's free) which will warn you of impending HDD failure in many cases. Also make sure that you keep everything backed up.
I might also be worth considering replacing your HDD as others have suggested, just to be safe.

Plex basically is XBMC. It's a tweaked port.
Yeah, would be good to see 1080p supported in the iPad 3!

I do apologize for that.
I have two iMacs and a Mac Mini, all which shipped with MySQL installed.
Very poor generalization on my part!
Very poor generalization indeed. I've owned more than a dozen Macs over the last six years, and NONE of them had MySQL pre-installed. But then again, I only had the desktop version of OS X on my machines and not OS X Server -- OS X Server really comes with MySQL pre-installed.
But maybe you mistake MySQL with SQLite, which is what most Apple software uses as its storage engine.
Anyway -- for uninstalling MySQL from OS X, maybe this blog helps:

I also would only use the official MySQL DMG image to install the software on OS X; it can be downloaded from the MySQL website.

In the Finder View Options, do you have it set to either "Snap to grid" or "Keep arranged by" name/type/...? If so, it will automatically place your icons.
