I'm really puzzled what you people see good at this. This is pure *****.
Apple took the best small flash-based player in the world and made it the worst. With direct USB plug, you had amazing portability, still had MP3 player and good take it wheever you want. I regularly used to transfer small files from/to work, exchange files with friends etc.
With this, I would need to carry that stupid dock as well.
So it still has no screen at all, now has no USB as well, but it has the hinge. Wow.
The worst piece of "design" ever offered by Apple. Probably designed by a person that never actually used Shuffle in real life.
Get out of the box and think bout it from a music perspective. No need to compare it with the older shuffle. I`ve seen a lot of small mp3 players and none of them got me interested enough to even consider one. All I cared for was a full screen iPod. But this new shuffle is definitely cool. Not to mention it`s cheap too. No real need to worry bout losing or breaking it. It`ll keep people like me going who are interested in getting an iPod for themselves but dont want to buy until the real thing arrives (vPod). I m definitely getting one as soon as I can.
I can definitely say that it`ll sell thrice as much compared to the older shuffle. Or in case there are few more people like me then you might see it being the bestselling iPod during this Xmas.
I'm also curious as to the 'waterproof-ness' of the model. if we're using it while exercising or skiing or in the garden - it's going to get rough and diry and moist. For such a small player (cool as it is) you almost need something protective on it (maybe a film product).
Wonder if the aluminum makes it have some kind of weight - the stick ones were almost too light...
With the THING being this cheap, I`d certainly not worry bout it much.

I'm still rather new to to Macs, but is there precedent for releasing software like iLife later on in the MacWorld show? it's a few days isn't it? is it possible that it might be released later in the week?
Steve generally announces iLife updates during his keynote every year, but it didn't happen this year. :( I'm hoping it will be released (or at least announced) sometime this week, just like what you're hoping for. I love iLife and I would really like to see what features/improvements they add to iPhoto and iMovie. I can't imagine Apple waiting too long to do something...

I think it's pretty damn impressive considering it's emulated.
No. Rosetta is a binary translator. It's not an emulator. It's still impressive work.

It's exactly what it needs to be. The market is not ready for a full on electric vehicle. Range, charge time, infrastructure, cost, etc is not where they need to be.
I agree the market isn't ready for a battery-only EV, but I disagree that the Volt is "what it needs to be". It's still a dual drivetrain vehicle, and I think that's the wrong approach.
Much better would be a small diesel engine to power a generator. Look at locomotives for the right way to do an extended range EV.

"iSteve"? Ugh. Anyway, don't worry, they will preserve his head in a jar (http://findicons.com/pack/1227/futurama_vol_5_heads_in_jars), Futurama-style.
Only Steve's head won't be in a jar like those depicted by your link...
Rather, his head will be in a big glass cube! :D

So I am able to track any person, regardless of whether or not the nike + sensor is on them, if I am within 60 feet. I mean c'mon. If I had to stay within 60 of em the whole time, it would just be easier to drop the laptop and reciever I'm carrying around and just walkand use my eyes.

I think none the white (plastic) macbook ever supports 8GB of RAM...
The mid 2009 white MacBook has the same chipset as the late 2008 aluminum MacBook. Aside from Apple restricting the mid 2009 white MacBook via intentionally crippling firmware, why wouldn't it be able to support 8 GB RAM?

sweet. portable music player AND fireplace.
what more do you really need? ...save suffering 3rd degree burns.
Haha! That would come in handy, with these long cold Minnesota winters. :D Anyway, anything would have to be more durable than the current Nano enclosures. I love my mini because of its casing, and have waited on picking up a new iPod until I see something more durable. I have no need for a 30-60GB iPod, the 4-6 GB's is the sweet spot for me personally.

Again, anyone know if this will work under 10.5.8?
The page http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3 says you need MacOS 10.6.6.
"You must be running Snow Leopard to address 8GB on these systems."
Did you look on the site before asking your question here?

W-CDMA is just an air-interface standard. It's not a mixture of anything. It was originally designed for the Japanese FOMA system and was subsequently adopted by the 3G GSM people.
It is a CDMA air interface, but it's unrelated to IS-95, the popular US standard used by Sprint and Verizon that's frequently called "CDMA" as if the terms are interchangable. It doesn't contain any GSM, and it doesn't contain any IS-95. It is, however, like IS-95, a CDMA system, and UMTS, which uses it, is a version of GSM.
Not exactly.
From Wikipedia:
"More technically, W-CDMA is a wideband spread-spectrum mobile air interface that utilizes the direct sequence Code Division Multiple Access signalling method (or CDMA) to achieve higher speeds and support more users compared to the older TDMA signalling method of GSM networks. W-CDMA is a competitor to CDMA2000."
And if you look at this presentation on page 9: http://www.ieee.or.com/Archive/diversity_in_3g/diversity_in_3g.pdf
you'll see that the W-CDMA standard did evolve from GSM and CDMA (IS-95).
There are a lot of other references out there too, but these are the 2 I have readily available.

Oh how nice, instead of AT&T doing the work themselves they are having us do it for free.
**** you AT&T
Well provided AT&T actually acts on the information generated by the app, it's a win-win. Customers get to report exact gaps in performance and AT&T has an inexpensive and widespread source of feedback to act on.

Haha and everyone thought it would be some kind of big April Fools joke by Game Informer.
The problem that I now see with three different SKUs is the fact that ONLY the top model has HDMI. They should have included HDMI in all the newer models. But, I guess I can understand why Microsoft made that decision. It's so that they won't piss off current customers that previously bought a 360. They would have to go the Elite model to get HDMI. Oh well, still very glad I waited. Now some of the triple A titles have dropped in price. :D

Or...would the new Zune release coverage put the new iPod release in the back of the newspaper? Not sure which way it would go...
I'm quite sure of which way it would go. Are you a betting man?

jon stewart, or should i say Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz, is not funny and is an unintelligent, illogical, emotional child. anything funny he says on his show is no doubt written by a team of young writers. he is famous for being a clown.
Yes, because if there is one unifying thread of Jon Stewart's media image, it is that he hides his Jewish heritage.
Seriously, what the hell?

I built a new system with a gigabyte x58a-ud3 and stock cooler, which is massive. It can handle 2 x16 cards, I probably didn't need all that ram though for a single cpu and I already had a 650 psu but if that isn't enough power I will have to swap the 480 into one of the other systems which have 1200 watt psu's.
I have one more 650 psu that I want to use this fall for another build so that I can put the 275 gpu's into the 650 psu builds and 2 each 400 class gpu's into the 1200 watt machines, does that make sense? Anyway I will end up with: 2 builds with 650 watt psu's and 4 gtx 275 gpu's and 2 builds with 1200 watt psu's with 4 400 class gpu's.
My goal is to reach 1 million points per week!
oh ok. so you will primary fold with just 4 systems, or 5?
right now i have 4 primary systems that i'm folding with, and i would love to build another, but not right now with the heat. maybe when it gets colder. sometimes i wish i had a basement to put them!
just so you know, you can fold with a 200 series and 400 series gpu in the same system. it took a little for me to get it to work, but it does.
let us know when you start building another rig. and how the overclock is coming!

Most people who buy Macs are somewhat creative. With a Celeron processor, you can't be very creative...
How about a Core Solo? I thought they were about as fast as an early G5. Plus the Intel graphics are actually faster for 2D stuff (playing video, for instance) than an accelerator card with 64MB of VRAM.

Apple's never shown any signs of being keen on Virtual Desktops so I'm not sure where that's coming from, especially as the "Hide/show" feature of NEXTSTEP that ended up in OS X is, arguably, slightly more useful anyway.
If they do have it, I hope it's like the Amiga's screens, with desktops opening and closing automatically rather than being permanently open. They need to be self-managing, and designed to make computing easier to understand. Traditional "multiple desktops" are a powerful feature, but I don't think they aid understandability.

That would be cool. What would make it cooler is intead of having individual keys, have it be one giant touchscreen like a Ninitendo DS or (even better) like they have on Star Trek.
I don't think that could ever happen, not with today's technology.
To find out why, go to your microwave and see how quickly you can "type" into its keypad. Or, next time you renew your vehicle license plate registration, see how well you can type your address on the kiosk touch screen (assuming a kiosk like ours in Ontario).
