At first we had to code our own getters and setters. There was no concept of a property in Objective-C 1.0, except by the convention that if a class had a method x and a method setX: then it could have been said to have property x.
Then Apple created Objective-C 2.0 and it introduced the @property and @synthesise directives, as well as the dot notation. And the number of getters and setters we had to write was reduced to near zero. And our getters and setters become correct in the face of concurrency (assuming no nonatomic) which set us up well for the days of multicore CPUs and GCD.
And the people programming in the land of Apple were happy. (Well generally, some have some valid objections to dot notation).
So yeah, it's just syntax. But I'd highly recommend you use it, unless you have strong reasons not to.

I have been working with Aperture 3 for a while. It occasionally freezes or crashes, but otherwise all is well.
Today however the 'adjustment' panel suddenly went empty: all I can see now are the drop down buttons for 'Presets' and 'Adjustments'.
I am not in 'Quick Preview'.
I have repeatedly restarted my computer.
I have restarted Aperture.
I have deleted Aperture preference files in the library.
I have repaired the Aperture library database.
Still no luck.
Any polite suggestions?
Thanks.

The earliest OS you can run on the 1400 series is system 7.6. The ideal OS to run on the 1400 series is System 8.1 -- I believe you can run System 8 on 8MB of RAM but this is like the bare minimum, I know the minimally configured 1400 series came with 8MB of RAM, right?
the 1400CS @ 117Mhz could run a unique version of 7.5.3. The 133Mhz & 166Mhz models required 7.6.1 (also a unique version IIRC). System 7.5.5 never ran on a 1400
If you have a CD ROM module in it that works (though how can tell without MacOS 8.x boot disc will be hard) you might be able to find a PB1400 original bundle disc on eBay.
Some "691" numbers from the CDs are:
System 7.5.3 CD for PowerBook 1400 series v2.0 (691-1519-A)
System 7.6.1 CD for PowerBook 1400 series v3.0 (691-1557-A)
Note that country specific CDs will prefix the 691 number with a letter. International English is a "Z" prefix. Apple used to maintain a list but it seems to have gone AWOL.
The 1400s were later supplied with MacOS 8.0 and I believe a generic release/retail version of MacOS 8.0-8.6 should work fine. If you go to OS 8 I'd recommend MacOS 8.6.
There appears to be a 7.5.3 PB1400 available here (http://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=10270), but this is not an endorsement nor a recommendation.
Happy hunting. :)

and some people have told me i cant make split screen videos on imovie.
Google iMovie split screen, saw a video on youtube where the guy had used the picture-in-picture function to get something approaching it.
i really think it woud've been helpful if they had added video recording (split screen) in garageband.
Wouldn't it have been even better had they put it in iMovie, their amateur video editing app?

So I have this old iMac just laying around in my parents basement. My sister was using as her desktop, but she now has a dell laptop against my judgement. Anyway I'm just wondering what people are doing with their old iMacs these days... The only problem it has is once in a while it will fail to recognize the mouse and possibly keyboard. In years past I wasn't as savvy with macs so i just bought a new one instead of fixing it. I imagine this should be an easy fix. Any ideas or examples of what people have them doing would be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time!

Self portrait taken (somewhat) recently during my time as a Campus Rep. Not only do I love the company and their products, but I spread the Apple love whenever I can! Minor retouching and compositing, etc...

Yes i do love my Macs now. And i must say that was one of the best breakups i ever had. If we never broke up I would never had found the joys of Macs. :)

I Have a white MacBook with the old touchpad. For full screen apps you need 3 finger swipes so that can't be done. Instead I use ctl and arrow keys to switch between full screen apps (like switching spaces in 10.6).
Launchpad uses 2 finger gestures to change pages and works well on my trackpad.
For mission control, you can use 2 finger swipe up to separate grouped windows.
By 2 finger swiping up on a dock icon, this activates expose for that app. Swipe down to deactivate.
Also, in DP2 there is now an option in the trackpad preferences to reverse the scrolling behaviour. This was not in dp1 for older trackpads.
Through a combination of screen corners and keyboard shortcuts I think you can get a similar experience to multitouch trackpad.

it depends on what kind of wifi networks youre consistently on.
if you're using public or semi-public wifi networks, then you should probably change your root password.
OR
you can install SBSettings and keep the SSH toggle off and only turn it on when needed, which is what i do. keep in mind that every time you restart it will automatically turn SSH access back on, which is a safety measure in the case something gets corrupted.

Have a look at that error message. Which file does it complain about? What SDK does it belong to?

Sorry to interrupt, but Marble Blast gold is a really really fun game.
Oh, and have you tried just a erase and install of your OS? That's quite simple (takes time, but it's simple) and usually fixes a lot of problems.

So I feel like changing the back of my black iPhone 4 amidst all of the white iPhone excitement to a white back (the white front doesn't do much for me). How do the back white parts that have been on the market for months compare to the real white iPhone 4? Same richness and quality?
