I am loving the added competition in the video streaming space.
Makes people like Comcast and TimeWarner squirm. The Post-TV days are here, just like the Post-CD, Post-Newspaper and Post-Magazine before. All we needed was mature encoding, and enough bandwidth.
Apple needs to do this to continue growing as a media distribution king; they're tiny in all areas except music right now.
The consumer will win, not from Apple's "rock bottom" pro-sumer pricing ;), but because the competition will drive costs down and bring more content into the mix.

I agree with alot of others on here. If it were to go down like this - Japan? Probably, UK? Very likely. Korea? uh.... I think the korean media is trying to build hype on something it knows very little about. Just my 2 cents.

Finally! I've been looking for a way to quickly blow through my mobile data caps and incur massive overage fees... This may be it!
I'll stick to local storage. Thanks.

Hi Jim, in theory what you're wanting to do "shouldn't" pose a problem. You may have to get it done at an actual ATT store though. BestBuy uses a propitiatory system to do all of our phone transactions and account management. While the system we use does allow us the capability to do what you are wanting, the people using it will more than likely not know how to do it. Unless you go to a pretty decent store (a higher revenue band), chances are the mobile associates will not have been trained to do these things.
For example, when the 3GS first came out, they were completely unaware that I could purchase it for early upgrade for only 199 or 299, since it was the special iPhone early upgrade. They were turning away clients left and right because they only knew how to sell the iPhone to new clients. They didn't even realize they had the ability to sell someone an iPhone who was still under the 2 year contract for an extra 200 dollars, they were just turning people away.
I would suggest calling your local store and asking speak to either the BestBuy mobile manager, or whomever has the most seniority in the mobile department. If they give you a straight answer then you should be good, if not, then they haven't been properly trained and there's little they will be able to do for you.
That's what I was afraid of, but thank you nonetheless for confirming that the fears are valid -- I'm sure the store is one of the best, it was a pilot for the BB/Magnolia concept when it opened a few years ago (Sterling, VA), but I'll probably just pre-order at the Apple Store and save the coupon for something else. Thanks again for the info!

Here is another way of stopping the whine (for a short time):
TURN ON BLUETOOTH and use a mouse!
At the office i work with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
When using a mouse it stops permanent.
At home i work without it and turn normaly bluetooth off.
Now i descovered that when i turn on bluetooth the whine stops ...
But when not using a bluetooth device it comes back after some time.
Getting stranger every minute ....
Actually this used to be a macbook pro problem only.
After the efi firmware update it seems to spread to the macbooks (white, 1.83 here)

Price difference isn't as much as people think on NEW Macs.
On used vs used, it's huge.
You can get spec'd HP xw8400s for 100-300 on eBay, while a similar MAcPro costs in the range of 1000 - 1500.
Like right now, mp dual core 5160 is selling for 250. Can step up to quads for about 500-600 with a xw8600.

I got a nice fast MBP 13 a little over a year ago. Then I got an MBA 11 for its portability. Worried whether it was different enough to be worth it. But now I use the MBP 13 far less often, it's become my desktop computer.
The MBP used to go places in a backpack or briefcase. The MBA 11 gets carried around like a magazine.
The MBA 11 is more portable than an iPad plus a small Bluetooth keyboard.
Ever thought about replacing the MBP with a base iMac or so?

I have a feeling this exercise by AT&T Mobility is a lot like pushing the "Cross-the-Street" button on New York City stoplights. i.e. Makes you think your helping, but in reality having no effect on anything! :)

According to their Office of Information Technology, 45% of computers purchased this year were Macs. While this statistic only represents on-campus sales, it does represent a significant trend of the past 3 years. In only 15% of computers sold were Macs, with steady increases to 25% and 38% in 2004 and 2005.
Awesome! Many of my Princeton friends are Mac-based. I wonder, though, for every Mac sold on campus, how many Dells are sold via the internet on or before the student gets to school.

While Apple has been fairly consistent, I'm all for them waiting until they get it right before shipping it. This one needs to be an example of their best work, not another "ship it" phone.

It's funny, but wherever I go, I always see people with iPhones. My train, on plane trips between Chicago and NYC, during meetings, etc. I am amazed the number is only 5% - but I guess it's the circles that I am in.
The people with dumb-phones probably keep them in their pockets until they ring. Smart-phone people have their phone out more so it is more visible. Dumb-phones still make up over half of the global market (I think).
The staggering thing is the share of the premium customers that Apple has. By "premium", I mean those who actually buy a smartphone for the smartphone features like music, video, apps and such as opposed to those who just got whatever phone was the best free/ultra-cheap phone available (e.g.: last year's Android models for free with 2-year contract).
The iPhone customers actually fork over hundreds of dollars in music, video, and app purchases after they buy the phone. Those are the "premium" customers and right now Apple has the majority of them.
The customers who just got whatever free phone was available rarely buy more stuff after they get the phone. My father falls into this category, he just wants the thing to ring when somebody calls. He recently got excited to show me that he could change ring tones on his new phone. I was happy for him, but realized he would never ever use apps. I may get him an iPhone one day just so he can access he favorite sports information on the go.

Wow, sucks if you ordered when it was 4-5 weeks.
People ordering after you getting units faster
nah, just spoke to apple, she was 100% sure that people that ordered last week would get them before the ones that order say today

Just downloaded this and it connected straight away, no problems. However, does it only work with the built in tuner? I can't seem to find a way to view programs on the composite video input connection, where my Sky box is connected.

That would be cool. iPod Shuffle (USB stick) -> iPod Shuffle (clip) -> iPod Shuffle (earbuds) -> iPod Shuffle ear implants.
Add a glowing apple logo implant into my neck along with brain to ipod control and I'm so there.

If some of the components come from Japan, is Apple scanning the finished units for radiation? I'm not saying but I'm just saying...
Check out www.theregister.com for some articles that provide a bit of sanity to that issue. If you are afraid of radiation then you should insist that your iPad is transported by ship and not by aeroplane, because it gets much more exposure to radiation while in the air.
