I believe, for a server, it offers much more. I think it has redundant power supplies, lights-out operation and includes Mac OS X server. Since you obviously don't need those things (since you see no value in them) I don't know why you would want one.
Keep in mind, other than OS X server, things like that redundant power supply are cost extra options.
For someone like me, I was thinking of purchasing 2 of these things, however, cost really is a factor for me here. My primary application is a render node for computer graphics. Problem is, for the price the XServe costs with 2GB memory and a 2.66GHz dual processor system, I can get a Boxx render node system with the a 3.0GHz configuration and OpenSUSE 10.1 for for less. As much as I would like this system, I'll have to pass for now until I am ready to put together a SAN.
EDIT: Heck, for the configuration I really want, it is over $1000 more for the XServe as opposed to the Boxx rendernode.

Whilst you're right that many of us would struggle picking out our favourite beer brands from a line up it would be easy to spot the one that doesn't actually taste of beer at all, namely Budweiser.
Very true. I was over a friends house the other day. We get together regularly for beer tasting, always having some micro offering to try. One day he slipped me a Bud Light. Damned near threw up.
But let people drink what they want. I really don't care to get into some petty argument about what they "should be drinking". My little beer secret: When I am cutting the lawn and it's real hot, I actually like a High Life on occasion. Diss me for THAT and you'll see a bottle upside you're pretentious head.

The engine cradle of the new Corvette C6 is made primarily of magnesium. If magnesium is the choosen material to contain a 7 liter engine spinning at 7,200 rpms at temperatures hot enough to boil water, it should be good enough for the lowly iPod. Now the MBP, thats another story.

Won't happen. Until every computer (and I'm looking at you, el cheapo PCs) has TB, they'll keep putting in everything. Also, TB is an Intel thing so AMD is out. And making (and marketing) stuff just for the Mac creative market has never driven down prices. IIRC, Western Digital were retailing for about a $20 premium over base for identical hard drives that were formatted as HFS+ and had "Mac" on the box.
Prediction: you know that 30-pin connector Apple recently patented, the one that carries USB and Thunderbolt? That'll be the only port on MacBook Airs next year.
my portable 2.5" drive is from OWC, who could very well put out a TB only solution. But I agree with the general sentiment that most will continue with multi-port products.

All I know is that the first game ranks amongst my very favorite. I pre-ordered this one, too. I have a PC gaming rig, and would have bought this anyway, but Valve made two key positive moves in this release-- decisions that get me behind this company in a way that is probably only second to Apple.
1. They released a fully functional version of the Steam client with the PS3 release, making cross platform play and syncing a fully mainstream idea. (Ask EA about this, they're doing it, too.)
2. They released this on day one for the Mac.
I am going to play it exclusively on my Mac, too. Very psyched to play this game!!

and when people realize that to get the most out of Vista they will need a new machine (anyone with a CPU more than 2+ years old). I see 10% US market share within 5 years. :)
One can always hope. But when has this ever NOT been true for a Microsoft operating system? Windows 95 ran poorly on computers released when 3.1 was out. Windows XP had compatibility issues with many Win 98 boxes. Etc, etc. This has always been true for them. The only difference now is how long XP has been out without being significantly updated.

That's the reason Apple chose google maps in the first place. When they first introduced the iPhone, there would be no plausible way to store maps on a phone with only 4/8GB of storage.
True, perhaps not the entire world. But before the iPhone came along, back when we all mostly had "only" 512MB for data and apps, many of us had installed a subset of the TomTom database on our smartphones.
Outside the USA, some phones even came with TomTom installed by the carrier for the country where it was sold. Especially HTC Windows Mobile phones.

I'm married. I don't agree with what he did, but I understand...
Sam Kinison once said something along this line, too:
"I don't support violence against women, but I understand what turns Mr. Hand into Mr. Fist."

Yeah... bending it in half? Eh.. ok. But taking off the back to do it? Fail. You can't remove the sturdiest part of the product and then say "hey look, it blended!"
Pointless anyway... it's just an advertisement.

I have a 2.66 15" Late 2008 MacBook Pro, my firmware matches the upgraded listing to allow 8GB of RAM. Pretty cool :)
actually the computer you are talking about was an early 2009 upgrade. they upgraded to a 2.66 ghz on the mbp 15" and also more on the 17" mbp. i have the same computer and got confused because the computer thinks its a late 2008 when apple considers it an early 2009. however it was still one that only supported up to 4 gb until this upgrade. cant wait to add 8 gb. just waiting to find some that are on sale for like $80

December is a little late... considering a fair amount of the consuming proleteriat does their shopping on Thanksgiving weekend for Christmas
Well, we don't have a Thanksgiving weekend down here so it wouldn't matter for us. Nor do they have one in Europe or Asia. It's just the US/Canada that do Thanksgiving and even those are on different weekends.
Anytime before Christmas would be cool so long as it's not going to replace the whole iPod lineup because I'm damn sure I'm getting a 5.5G for my birthday in about 5 weeks time.

What do Korean's know that the rest of the world don't?
For example, unlike the rest of the world, some Korean's know what's being produced in their factories...

I love the anti-phising stuff. I also hope they include built in anti-virus and anti-spyware. I know there isn't much of either for the Mac but it would be great for marketing and the day when something bad does appear.
Almost exactly what I was going to say.
Those screenshots don't look fake at all. Then again I'm sure any good designer could do that no problem.

If I were to let my imagination run wild for a second... I could imagine working on Maya or 3DS Max or any other 3D rendering engine on a laptop, and having the iPad running a complementary application that uses this type of technology to display the scene I'm working on in real-time in "psuedo 3D" as I work on them in the 3D rendering engine.
This application would be brilliant for that, you could rotate the ipad or move your head around to look at the object you are modeling in a completely natural manner. You would basically be able to see the object you're working on in 3D as you work on it.
Same kind of thing can be used for any CAD package, or something like SolidWorks for engineering. Could be brilliant.
(The real-time idea comes from some of the stuff Adobe released in the last day or two).

So lets see more MR member piercing pics, you know you have them and want to show us :)
Just be very careful. Continue proper hygiene. The erythematous tissue at your temple is very evident. Meaning red with slight swelling. Just be careful there are a lot of blood vessels in the area and it can be serious.

I get a kick out of reading these types of forums. The "my import is so much better than your domestic" types are really just a bunch of poseurs. Several years ago I owned a bar and I had a standing bet that no one could pick their brand out of a six glass line up. I had to pay a guy once, but I think he got a lucky guess, 1 out of 6, the odds are that someone will guess correctly. To me, beer is beer. Golf and hanging out at the lake are about the only time I drink beer anyway. My drink of choice is whiskey, Jack Daniel's Tennessee Sippin whiskey neat to be specific. Anyone who mixes good whiskey with ANYTHING should be put to death on the spot. Mix with blends, not the good stuff. And for those of you who don't know, Jack Daniel's IS NOT BOURBON. Never has been, never will be. So all you folks quit calling it bourbon.

I spoke to two techs at PC World computer superstore (biggest computer retailer in UK) two weeks ago about monitor compatibility with my G4 Mac Mini. Turned out both these guys owned Intel Macs, folks pay $$$$ to have their PCs fixed by these guys:p . Anyway I mentioned I was waiting till Leopard to upgrade my Mac. One of the guys mentioned they'd already got the date for when Intel Mac Mini's with Leopard will be in store. Wait for it... April 2007:( . It seems unlikely that Leopard will pounce onto our screens in January.
