There seem to be alot of interesting options as far as the live previews go (personally I like the animated thumbs idea, but perhaps on mouse-over only...this could even be implemented with audio files - previewing the start, middle and end in short bursts perhaps). Hopefully whatever is implemented will be customizable by users, especially those on older machines who may not have the graphics bandwidth to deal with the new innovations.
Bringing me to my question: has anyone personally seen how vista's live previews and 'flip' etc. are performing on older machines?

I am very unimpressed. No Wifi, no 65nm process, no internal power supply, it will still be loud as heck. And if I want it, I am forced to get black, i don't want black.
Someone said why does it matter if their are 3 SKUS. Try this. Look at the Mac Mini, 2 models. One with a superdrive, one without. But what if you want the cheaper one with a superdrive. Whoops guess you are out of luck.
It forces you to buy the higher model. Only the Elite has the HDMI and the 120GB. Of course you could add the 120GB for the rip me off price of $180.
Let's compare that to the Mac Pro. One SKU customizable. No one is left out, you can choose what you want and you are limited to getting only certain things on another SKU. Most, including myself, prefer that model. What if Apple put Santa Rosa in the top end MB and left it out of the bottom? Not much of a choice, huh?

And when you look at the pricing, the 360 is cheaper but you are getting a lot less. For $120 more than the 360 Elite, I get Blu-ray, media readers, wifi. I can even upgrade the drive to 160GB for only $110.
The PS3 is clearly the better system. If was going to spend retail price on a console it would be the PS3. Hands down.

some notes:
in many european countries legal immigration laws were quite lax for decades while for example the US has been controling their legal immigration much more strictly during the same time especially in requirements of having already a job contract signed or having a wanted higher education degree: to critizise european countries that some of them are now introducing similiar legislation after decades of rather limited requirements ? i'm not convinced
another point: in many european countries demand for unskilled workers have dwindled massivly over the last 20 years. also the unskilled worker market is structured slightly differently. sure there are factory work, cleaning and construction work but for many other unskilled work another thing comes into play in europe:
the factor language: for france and england that is less of problem since illegal immigrants might speak at least a little bit since those languages are teached around the world. but for other countries ?
in Austria the biggest unskilled worker industry is the tourism sector and speaking german is a requirement ... retail ? to a lesser degree but a certain language skill still very much needed (as a consequence the austrian job market is already flooded by legal immigrants/workers from eastern germany for such jobs)
the result: the unemployment numbers for non-native language, unskilled immigrants are obviously the worst by a wide margin.. which hardly surprising is also true for crime statistics as a consequence
also the situation for (unskilled)workers in the EU who aren't coming from the EU is to become much worse: the job market is to be only liberalized more:
in germany there is currently a massive discussion about their job market opend to eastern EU countries workers: the estimated worker immigration for germany alone ranges up to 800.000 within the next few years additionaly mostly into lower wage & skill jobs
and those additional eastern europe workers arrive as full EU citizens without all the difficulties of non EU immigrants

I guess I'll be pre-ordering one of these tomorrow since my 360 is still MIA. Gives the cops a month to track it down. If I don't have my old one back by then, I'll grab the Elite.
Doesn't seem that bad a deal since it comes with an HDMI cable and the new 120 gig HD will retail for $179. The black color will also match most of my electronics (except for the Wii).

The "Will it blend?"-series is pure genius. It is not some random Joe smashing stuff, it is a for-profit company spending very few dollars and getting extremely wide coverage.

if i'm paying for a digital subscription, there's no reason why i should also have to look at ads.
i can see why there are ads for a print edition, due to printing costs, paper, and shipping, but none of those exist for a digital edition.

Well, considering Core Solo is bound to be much cheaper than Core 2 Duo, I'd say that's a good COST reason to keep it.I doubt there will be much difference. If fact I doubt Core Solo will continue to be made beyond this Winter.

I have to assume that since Apple just released the 5.5G iPods, that if a 'true' video iPod is released, it will be as a 'super' iPod of sorts. This will be similar to when the iPod photo came out.
This is the only thing that makes sense to me, otherwise, why would apple put so much time between the two 5g releases, only to make them obsolete a month later???
This also makes sense in light of apple bringing down the prices so much with its last update, so that they can make room at the top.

The most visible one that Apple gave was that it takes minutes for a GPS location if you don't have an assist. You can sort of test this by going out and getting a dumb GPS and seeing how long it takes to find you. In my experience it can take hours (moved between hemispheres so the GPS took a while to figure out where it moved to). With wifi and cell tower data it can speed up location finding because it can give the phone a pretty good estimate as to where you are as a starting point. Keeping a local cache of nearby locations allows the phone to not have to query constantly and increase the speed even more assuming you don't have a fast network connection. This also increases your battery life as the phone isn't working as hard or as long.
Exact percentages? Beats me. The location finding ability of the device would be greatly decreased without this sort of cache, though.

It's already possible (for free) to stream video content from the EyeTV over WiFi to the iPhone/iPod touch. All you needed to do is connect to the EyeTV server running on your Mac using Safari on the iPhone/iPod touch. However, you can't control the application remotely and you can't view live TV (only video that you had prerecorded) so the advantage to this new iPhone app is that it enables live TV viewing and control of the EyeTV application running on your Mac.
Now, if it really works over 3G without jailbreaking your iPhone then that would be something new.
